Sexting in one sentence

Sexting is intimacy in writing. It does not have to be crude: often it starts as ordinary flirting, turns frank, and ends with both people turned on although nobody left the house. People use the word as a verb ("we were sexting"), as a noun ("a sext") and in phrases like "sexting chat" or "sexting partner".

Sexting, cybersex and virtual sex: the same thing?

Almost. Cybersex is the older word, from the chat rooms and instant messengers of the 1990s, when "cyber" meant anything that happened on a computer. Virtual sex is the broad umbrella: anything intimate that happens through a screen, from text to video calls. Sexting is the phone-era word and leans on messages and photos.

Someone sets the scene: where you are, what she is wearing, what just happened. The other answers in kind. Then it builds: details, wishes, reactions. A good sext is less about vocabulary and more about attention: answer what was actually said, add one detail of your own, leave room for the other person.

One example. She writes: "The office is empty. I just took my watch off. Guess why." You write back with a guess, and the scene has started. No photos are required at all, although they often join in later.

The rules that make sexting sexting
